The theatre was built in 1972 and restored in 1984 especially for Ceausescu. It is located in the center of Bucharest, in Universitatii Square (Piata Universitatii). Piata Universitatii was an important place during romanian revolution in 1989 and anticommunist protests in 1990. It is known as a symbol of anticummunist fight and it is called "zone free of communism".
